Library and Search

Q: I'm looking for a particular strip. How can I find it?
A: It's easy! If you're looking for a certain strip of a comic that you know we carry, like Get Fuzzy or Pearls before Swine, chances are you can find it one of two easy ways: If you click on the 'All Comics' or 'Editorial Cartoons' link at the top of each page, you will see an alphabetical listing of every cartoon as well as a brief description. Clicking on one of them will bring you directly to that Comic page within the website!

An alternate (and just as effective) method is using our handy-dandy Search Function (also at the top of every page) that allows you to search by keyword, character name, title and tag (information that other comics.com readers put in about each comic and strip) as well as by date! What this does is build a huge database around OUR database to help you find what you're looking for! You can also do an advanced search by date range and sort by rankings, votes and comments.

Q: Can I search the site by keywords or by dialogue that appears in a particular strip?
A: Right now you can search comics.com by strip title, characters, publication date or date range and other keywords. We are also implementing a 'tag' function for each strip, so the the searching possibilities are endless! You can even add your own 'tag' to a strip by clicking on the 'tag' icon at the bottom right of the strips you would like to add a keyword for.

Q: Who has access to the comic library?
A: Because Comics.com is now a free service, everyone has access to the comic library. If we have it on the website, you will be able to access and enjoy it.

You can access our library in several different ways: Just use the 'All Comics' and 'Editorial Cartoons' links up at the top to find your favorite strips! There is also a calendar feature on each comic and editorial cartoon, so you can check out past strips that way as well! It's better (and cheaper) than a time machine! You can also search our entire library via the keyword search box at the top of every page. "

Q: Comics.com has a tag function! That's great... so what's a 'Tag'?
A: It's one of them newfangled webby things that will make your Comics.com surfing much easier! A tag is a bit of data, like a keyword, that gets assigned to a comic strip. So for instance, one of our favorite felines, Bucky the Katt from Get Fuzzy, might be tagged 'cat'. That way if anybody wants to do a search on cats in Comics.com he'll show up in the results. We've also incorporated tag functionality at the bottom of every strip, so everyone can chime in! Just click on the "tag" icon and add your own.

Q: Why are some of your comics referred to as "Classics"?
A: "Classics" are almost always strips that were originally published on an earlier date. Also, most of our "Classics" may be discontinued strips, but we love 'em anyway like "Raising Duncan", "Fat Cats", "Geech", "Jane's World", "L'il Abner", "Motley", "Shirley and Sons", and "One Big Happy." We re-run these strips and try and keep them aligned with the current annual calendar, but sometimes the strips we have don't fit with the current year, so we do the best we can to make them fit. That's why you may notice a holiday strip that shows up a week in advance.

Q: I would like to submit my comic strip idea. What should I do?
A: We are always interested in new ideas, especially if they come from such a comic savvy audience!

To submit comic features to United Feature Syndicate and Newspaper Enterprise Association for possible syndication you need to send submissions to:
Comics Editor
United Media
200 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10016

Addressing your package in any other way will delay the review of your work.

It can often take three months to review a submission. Please include your email in your cover letter.

We cannot grant appointments prior to seeing your work.

We realize all this may be daunting and possibly even discouraging. It is not intended to be. Just as your creation is important to you, our time and the efficient, thorough review of your work is important to us. Following these guidelines will make it easier on everyone.

The following tips may help you in the submission process:

Work in whatever size you feel most comfortable. However, please take the time to measure the kind of feature you are submitting in your local newspaper and work in the same proportion.

Your art needs to be clean and legible enough to reduce to newspaper size.

Please do not call us asking what kind of paper or other tools to use. If you are not an artist, please look into taking a beginning art class or look for art instruction books in the library.

Please do not spend a lot of money on your presentation. Expensive binders or special folders will not impress us. It is your work that concerns us. To submit comic features to us for possible syndication, please review the following information.

We would like to see 18-24 samples of your work so that we can judge its consistency. It is fine to include color work if you care to, but be certain to include some black & white line art as well.

Please include a short cover letter about yourself and your work. Lengthy character descriptions, licensing prototypes and large presentations are unnecessary and make our job more difficult. Please do not send oversize materials.

Submit photocopies or printouts on 8.5 x 11-inch paper. NEVER send original art. Never send anything that you must have returned.

Your full name and return address should appear on both your envelope and on each sheet of art in your submission in case your work becomes separated from its envelope.

If you would like your submission returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). If you would like confirmation that your submission was received and reviewed, you must also include a SASE. If no SASE is included, we will respond only to submitters from whom we would have received a SASE.

Q: What's this 'add to my comics page' button?
A: You can easily add your favorite comics to your personalized 'My Comics' page by clicking that button - but you must be registered or logged in. This will automatically add that comic to your 'My Comics' page - so you can see the most recent strip available from all the comics that you have added. Please note that the more comics you add, the longer it will take for the page to load. If you want to delete or move any of them, you can easily do so by using the red 'remove', 'move up' and 'move down' arrows above every strip

If you want to just save a particular strip - and NOT have the whole comic appear in your 'My Comics' page, then just click on the "Save" icon underneath that strip to store it in your strip library.

You can view your saved favorite strips in 'My Profile' - which can be accessed by the 'My Profile' link at the top right of the page, or by clicking on one of the "Strips" dates in the "My Favorites" section of each page.

Q: I re-registered but where are my saved strips from the old site?
A: You can view your saved favorite strips in 'My Profile' - which can be accessed by the 'My Profile' link at the top right of the page, or by clicking on one of the "Strips" dates in the "My Favorites" section of each page. The strips are archived in our database according to your email, so you will only see your previously saved strip library if you re-registered using the same email address you used to register at the old comics.com. If you registered with that previous email address and still cant see your library of strips, then please contact us with your email address and we will look into it.

Emails

Q: I'm getting more than one email from you. Make it stop!
A: You must love comics so much that you might have registered duplicate emails or are inadvertently forwarding one email to another. Please contact us with the details, any copies of duplicate emails you are receiving and the email address you would like to use and we'll take care of it for you.

Q: My email client (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird) does not show images or freezes when receiving emails from comics.com
A: If you are not receiving any images, it's possible that your email client prevents the automatic download of images; try clicking in the box in the email to download pictures. If it seems that our emails freeze your computer, it could be a mail network problem in which you should contact your provider. If they can't provide an answer, please let us know exactly what is happening and provide screen shots if possible .

Q: I am registered but have not been receiving my daily comic. I know I'm subscribed to it because I can see it in my list of subscriptions in My Account.
A: Yikes! But don't worry, we're here for you! There may be a glitch in your account settings. So please give us a holler by shooting us an email and we'll get right on it!

Q: Now that I am getting a comic strip by email, can I change it?
A: Absolutely! The new website is easy to use and very flexible, so you can have quick control over everything you receive. By clicking on the 'Add/Edit My Comics' button you will be zapped to a listing of all our comics and editorial cartoons. There you can check on or off if you want that comic to be sent to you via email as well as it appearing on your 'My Comics' page. See, we told you it was easy!

Widgets

Q: Great!...what's a widget?
A: A widget is a small web or desktop application that brings information to you, so you don't have to go looking for it yourself. Our Comics.com widget is a permanent porthole to all your favorite comics, giving you instant access to Get Fuzzy, Marmaduke, Luann, Pearls Before Swine, 9 Chickweed Lane and more without having to log onto comics.com or checking your email. Our widget brings them all right to you, both the current strip as well instant access to our extensive libraries. For FREE! Widgets are designed to be shared. You can send your favorite widgets to friends and co-workers, and magically make them appear on your Facebook or MySpace pages, your blog, your personal web page or even your desktop. All by clicking the "GRAB THIS WIDGET" button!

Q: Okay...how does this Widget of yours work?
A: It's easy! You can browse two different ways. All Comics tab: Gives you access to every comic and strip, in our library. The blue dropdown menu lets you see a clickable menu of all the comic titles. There you can ALSO select a particular comic favorite that you might want to save to your personal "My Comics" library by checking the box to the left of the title and then clicking "done" when complete.

My Comics tab: For easy access to your favorite titles, you can have them saved in your "My Comics" section by clicking on the check box in the blue dropdown menu in the "All Comics" tab. You can then see that day's comics for only those that you have chosen. If you want to add or subtract more faves, you can manage your selections by clicking on the "EDIT MY LIST" button in the drop down. By using the date arrows or the calendar icon, you can go back in time to see any past strip from all of our titles. If you want to browse from one strip to the next, you can use the bottom arrows. For those of you who like to live dangerously, you can also view strips randomly by clicking the random button (twisted arrows).

Q: I got to my favorite comic, but now I can't see the whole thing?
A: Since all comics come in various shapes and sizes, we've figured out a handy-dandy way for you to view them, but still keep our widget relatively cute n' compact. By clicking on the comic itself you can drag the entire strip right or left, and even up and down if the comic is tall. Releasing the mouse will disable that comics "grabability". If you want to see the comic full-size, then click on the little orange triangle on the right-hand corner of the strip and it will open a larger version of that particular strip in your web browser.

Q: How do I embed the widget into my webpage?
A: Just Click "GRAB THIS WIDGET" and it will then give you a large selection of sites that you can post this widget too, including your iGoogle, facebook and MySpace pages. If you have a personal page that is not listed there, and you know a little html or can add html code directly to your webpage, then you can use the embed code of the widget size you would like to add.

  1. Click "GRAB THIS WIDGET" on the widget size of your choice.
  2. At the bottom of the "Grab & Share" box, you will see a little button that says "copy code". Click on that and you will have saved the widget's embed code to you clipboard.
  3. Paste your embed code anywhere in the html of the page you want to add the widget to.

Q: How do I add a widget to my Wordpress® blog sidebar?
A: To add your Comics.com widget to a Wordpress blog, you have to first copy the embed code that you will need to place in the Wordpress Theme Editor via the admin area of the blog. We suggest using the 160x300 size widget since it fits most themes best.

  1. Follow instructions 1-3 above (How do I embed the widget into my webpage?)
  2. Login (with admin rights) to your Wordpress account
  3. Select the "Presentation" tab
  4. Select the "Theme Editor" sub-tab
  5. Select the theme file you want to edit from the list
  6. Paste the widget code in the desired location within the template sidebar.php file (you may want to back up your template file before making changes)

Q: How do I email this to a friend?
A:

  1. "GRAB THIS WIDGET" on the widget size of your choice.
  2. Click on the email button and follow the prompts
  3. Email the awesomely funny Comics.com widget to all of your friends.

Q: Why can't I get my Comics.com widget to work on my Vista sidebar?
A: Sadly, if it isn't working this probably means you have Vista 64 bit, which does not support Flash. Since the widget is Flash, this means you won't be able to load it into the sidebar.

Q: Do I need to download Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator) to get my Comics.com widget OR What is the difference between a web widget and a desktop widget?
A: There are two categories of widgets: web widgets and desktop widgets. Web widgets live on a web page. A web widget requires you to be on a certain website to use the widget while a desktop widget can always be displayed on your computer regardless of what web page you are viewing. You might put a web widget on your personalized start page to see Comics.com each time you open your browser or put the Comics.com widget on your blog to entertain your readers. You can even decorate your social networking profile with the daily (mis)adventures of Rip Haywire, Larry, the Croc from Pearls Before Swine, or even Bucky the Cat from Get Fuzzy. You know your friends will love it! Desktop widgets are best for those things that will be commonly used like a weather widget, a widget that shows local news and your daily Comics.com comic strip widget. A desktop widget, however needs a desktop application to serve up the widget, and that would be something like Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator).

Q: How do I get Yahoo! Widgets (Konfabulator) so I can add my Comics.com widget to my desktop?
A:

  1. Go to http://widgets.yahoo.com/download/
  2. Click the "Get Started Now" button at the right of the page
  3. Follow the instructions to download and install the application
  4. Enjoy Comics.com directly on your desktop each and every time you start your computer

Q: Why does facebook ask me to invite my friends?
A: Facebook is a friendly place. It just wants you to share all your cartoon friends to all your real-life friends, buddies and family. We have no control over the "share" feature but think you would be wise to use it.
