Interview with Luann Cartoonist Greg Evans
------------------------------------------

Question: What made you decide to become a cartoonist?

Answer: I was born with the dreaded "Cartoon Disease," an affliction that compels one to draw huge noses on goofy faces. Like nearly every comic strip cartoonist on the planet, I was inspired and influenced by the success and elegance of "Peanuts" by our beloved Sparky.

Q: What careers did you have before you became a professional cartoonist?

GE: I was a less-than-adequate hotel desk clerk, a not-very-good high school art teacher and a below-average TV ad copywriter. All along, I dreamed of being an incredibly outstanding cartoonist. I'm still working toward that.

Q: Are any of your characters based on real people?

GE: Yes, me. Actually, Luann's creation was inspired by my preteen daughter, Karen. Today, Karen is 24 and is nothing like Luann, except for the messy room part. All the characters in the strip are me when they exhibit their insecure, uncertain, confused side. The confident, positive, strong personality of characters such as Delta and Knute come from a place in me that WANTS to be that way. Personally, the character I most identify with is the nerd, Gunther.

Q: How does fan feedback affect the strip?

GE: Very little because it's impossible to gauge popular appeal from fan feedback. No matter what you do, a percentage will adore it and a percentage will abhor it. So I just do what pleases and amuses me and hope my sensibilities mesh with the majority.

Q: What career would you like to try if you weren't a cartoonist?

GE: I'd like to be James Bond.
