Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) of Brad Anderson

Comic Artist Q. When did you first start drawing cartoons?

A. I began drawing cartoons at a very young age. By the time I was 15 I was selling cartoons to various magazines such as Flying, Flying Aces, Hunting and Fishing, Farming, etc....

Q. Who were the cartoonists who most influenced you?

A. Panel/gag cartoonists who influenced me were Virgil Partch, John Gallagher, several Saturday Evening Post cartoonists and some New Yorker.

Q. How did you get your professional start?

A. I mailed cartoons to magazines and they began buying my cartoons.

Q. How would you describe your style?

A. Semi-real, lots of action, brush work.

Q. Where do you get your ideas?

A. I think like a dog.

Q. How did you come up with your characters?

A. I created a young family, Mom, Dad, 2 children who were adopted by a very large dog.

Q. Which are your favorite characters in your strip and why?

A. Marmaduke is my favorite character because he creates all the situations.

Q. Do you create on a daily basis? Do you prefer to work in the morning or at night?

A. I work 5 days a week on my strip. Sometimes I work 7 days a week. I work daylight hours. I worked nights, years ago. Then days and nights. But finally my eyes couldn't take the night work any longer.

Q. What materials do you use to draw your comics? Do you use a computer?

A. I do not use a computer to create my cartoons. Every cartoon is finished with black India ink. The line work is mostly done with a series 7 #1 Windsor-Newton brush, on Strathmore paper 1-ply for the daily and a 2-ply for the Sunday. Some of the inking is done with a Maxmark fine point pen. I draw my preliminary cartoon sketch on newsprint using a ball point pen and the Maxmark. I place this drawing on a lightboard and do the final inking directly on the Strathmore board. For the Sunday page color I make a 65% size copy of the Sunday on my xerox, then color with various color markers. My favorites are the Prisma color and the Pantone "Tria." All this work gives me a small spot on the comics page that Marmaduke fans look for each day.
